The
baton of the internationally known Edvard Tchivzhel (Chiv-jel) is raised,
followed by a bold downbeat that is his distinctive trademark.
Before the evening is over, the Peace Center concert hall audience will
be on their feet, a chorus of bravos filling the air. Clearly,
the Greenville Symphony can hold its own with the top big city
orchestras in America. But there’s more. Major Broadway
hits come to town during the season, and our community theatres are
filled with energy and talented performers. Our County Museum of
Art contains the famed Andrew Wyeth Collection while across town, one
of America’s foremost collections of religious art resides in the
Museum and Gallery on the campus of Bob Jones University. A short
drive away, the neighboring colleges of Clemson and Furman produce
outstanding dramatic and musical performances year-round. The
evidence is clear: the arts in every form are flourishing in the
Upcountry. More importantly, this has come about because of
community leaders with vision and dedication. The result?
Greenville offers a bountiful harvest of artistic endeavors filled with
vital intensity. It’s all here and now. Quiet,
please! The house lights are dimming.
